Origination week 12

• PART 1: Group Research (20 mins)

• Using YouTube choose one video for each of the concepts below
1. Communication Methods
the communication methods group showed us a video on youtube called "the future of communication" which explained that in the distant future majority of the earth would communicate virally through the internet on social network sites such as, Face Book, Myspace and many others. link to the youtube video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iu0ztxdsFis
2. Emerging Technologies
This group has searched up "3D television without the glasses" because normally when you watch a 3D television you need to wear the lenticular glasses to get the 3D effect, but the new television being shown this their youtube link, shows us that the Televisions are being manufactured with this lenticular glass on the television so you still get the full 3D effect. here is the link to the youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4VidUn-3xA

3. Idea adaptation
our group was given the task to find a video on youtube relating to Idea adaptation.
we came across the militaries big dog project
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHJJQ0zNNOM
it is a robotic dog like machine made to carry out army supplies such as equipment, food, cargo and even help carry the wounded.
The big dog in the youtube link shows us a glimpse of what it can do, by traveling on different surfaces & terrains and also any casualties it may encounter traveling in normal suburban areas or in war torn fields. the big dog will hopefully begin manufacturing in the distant future because it is a great concept idea and many people will benefit from its uses, because they carry an average of 25 kilos of equipment, and carrying that over a long distance could be dreadful and fatal.

• PART 2: Group presentations: (25 mins)
Each video must be prefaced by a verbal explanation of why the chosen clips
demonstrate the research topics above

when we got up in front of the class for the individual speeches, we each talked about different uses this new invention could help the army travel/ transport cargo in remote places. for example it could be helping in carry equipment through snow, up hill and even snow covered hills

Week 12 Collaboration - Using failure

Discuss these questions in relation to a group creating a design in collaboration

01 – What are the 3 best things about your efforts for this year’s exhibition?
  1. trying to get my role in the process done and alright
  2. helping others best i can when they need it
  3. display some interesting and awesome designs
02 – Did you manage time well?
not as good as i would plan but i got everything for the exhibition in on time and things set up alright

03 – Did you manage materials well i.e. test prototypes?
yes the materials were easy as my works were digital and just had to get them mounted

04 – Have you researched installation methods?
not really, i just knew that after i mount my images i would get some double sided tape and just stick them on the wall and get them all leveled

05 – Have you made a shortlist of the essentials for the last WEEK?
yes, i wrote down the things to get, things to bring and things to do before and on the day.

In regard to creative collaboration & the exhibition:
Discuss these questions

1 . List and describe 2 areas of failure in your preparation for uphere

  • mounting and getting my works all set up on the wall, but with the help of others i got them up in time, correctly and alright leveled
  • finishing my actual designs, because i had a change in mind and changed some bits of them which delayed the time i could be mounting them and finish setting it up

2. Describe how you could realistically improve on this next time you exhibit

i would give the exhibition a theme, not for everyones work but the building set up like scenery, maybe like a Hawaiian theme and there could be tike torches at the entrances or to light up the path to the exhibition, something fun and interesting like that.

Week 11 Collaboration - Reflection

Group Exercise - DISCUSSION
Reflection
Discuss these questions in relation to a group creating a design in collaboration

01 – What is the difference between reflection and criticism?
reflection is ones self thought on a topic, while criticism is someone else's opinion on the topic

02 – Can you reflect while you are designing?
yes you can. you can always change your mind about a particular area of your design

03 – Do you set aside time for reflection?
yes i do, at the start i visualize what my design might look like and thats when i reflect at the start, i also do mid way and at the end

04 – Do you make notes on your reflections?
on occasion yes i do just incase i don't remember it

05 – When is the best time to reflect?
i would say at midway and at the end

06 – Do you compare your work to work by your heroes?
no because i don't have any

07 – How do you benefit by comparison?
you learn from comparison, by using someone else's style or techniques and twisting/ personalizing them in your own way to make them yours

08 – What can be a disadvantage of comparison?
a big disadvantage is that someone else has already done it

In regard to creative collaboration:
Discuss these questions

1 . Describe how reflection has helped improve your own designs
it helps me refine my view and how i design them and gives me a better understanding on how i can add or remove things form the design
2. Describe how you have reflected on your group’s designs
on a positive way, they have come up with some great ideas and i have taken note of them, incase in the future i decide to do a familiar type of design
3. When is reflection useless?
when you are lost or confused about what it is you want to do

Origination week 11

Answer the following questions as succinctly as possible in your own words
10 mins: Cut & paste into your blog and start answers / 10 mins: Open discussion

1. What does Maeda call the 3 keys?
Away: sometimes you need to take a step back to see the whole picture,
Open: being open to all things simplifies everything
Power: the less you use the better. use less gain more

2. Describe how you have used these in your work towards UPHERE? Give at least
one example of each key.
with "away" i applied it to one of my exhibition designs, the further away you are from the image the more of an illusion it becomes.
for the handouts the "open" key is applied by simplifying the contents of the handouts to only maps it doesn't confuse the guest.
my designs i tried to keep them easy yet artistic, for this the "power" key is applied. because less effects and graphics the better and easier it would turn out
( sometimes to much effects will make them clustered and looks messy)

3. Describe an incident in the production of UPHERE where technology has been an enabler…. and another where it has been a disabler!
Technology has always been an enabler and has helped out a lot along the way. It also has been a disabler! when ever it freezes or messes up a bit it really scares us and especially when we try to save and it freezes up, quite terrifying

4. At this stage in the exhibition process you are all working on some element or process for the big event. List 3 things (in your current project) that you could take away to simplify and one thing you could add for meaning.

Things to take away

  • took out the use of many colors
  • replaced the hard to read fonts
  • took out text effects
Thing i could add: i added extra text to the image, it matches the theme of the image and i centers all the text to fit exactly in the midil of the circle.

Week 10 Collaboration - Moving on

Group Exercise - DISCUSSION
Moving On

Discuss these questions in relation to a group creating a design in collaboration

01 – Have you had to abandon any exhibition design concepts so far?
yes i have, i've changed my design concepts a few times
02 – If so, was it hard?
yes it was rather hard, because i really liked the idea, but i incorporated a bit of the old concept into the new concept
03 – Do you think it is easy to miss a better idea if it is not the first one?
sometimes yes, because you are really worked up and focused on the first idea and you leave everything else out
04 – Do you have any techniques for creating unpredictable ideas?
mixing random words together is a fun way to do it
05 – Is logic the best way to attack a design problem?
if it is for a brief or job, but for a personal design, you should try to think outside the box
06 – What other problem solving methods could work?
look on the net for some inspiration or new techniques/ styles
07 – Do you ever doubt your design decisions?
sometimes yes, i wonder why i chose to use a particular style or medium
08 – Do you ever consciously put on “another hat” to get inspiration?
yes, i try different things to get new ideas or ways to mix styles and techniques together
09 – Describe somebody opposite to you in relation to their design approach?
a friend i knew back in high school would get inspirations form the net but would do nearly the exact same but just a ad different
10 – Could you imagine designing like them?

not quite, because i want my work to be original and its hard to be original if someone else has already done it and your just copying

In regard to creative collaboration:
Discuss these questions - write a paragraph on each and use examples

1 . Describe how you have contributed to design solutions for other group members
i give them alternative ideas on their concepts, using their original concept/ ideas but twisting it slightly or adding in/ removing cretin things

2. Describe how you have challenged designs by other students in your group
by taking 1 idea and maybe twisting/ adding in an idea form another person, putting them together to see the results of our group

3. Are you flexible when others suggest design improvements / changes?
i don't mind the feed back from others, i think they help so i give their idea a try and add it in and if it doesn't look/ feel right i can undo it back to the original and try another idea

4. Choose a design that group input has changed radically. Post before & after images.

The 2 images above were uploaded by myself

5. Describe the process of shifting the design solution radically.
The change isn't to big, but i thought it helped fill the empty negative spaces. the dots also give it the computer chip look, as if you would see on an actual computer chip

Origination 2010 Week 10

Answer the following questions as succinctly as possible in your own words
10 mins: Cut & paste into your blog and start answers / 10 mins: Open discussion

1. Using UPHERE as an example, describe an aspect of your work or something
you have worked on, where you have found a symbiotic relationship that is both
complexity and simplicity
The design of my past/ futuristic sword. it is complex yet simple because of its concept, a mix of the future and the past. my personal aspect of it is that the complex part is the future while the simple bit is the past, as for me the past was much easier and enjoyable, while the future is okay but rather complex and confusing. on a design note the complexity is played by the technological pattern on the right side of the sword, it is meant to represent the future wit hits technology to come. the past is a normal yet rather medieval looking sword.

2. Provide a conceptual example of a situation that has arisen during this project
where you have had a return on failure?
i have tried different styles and different ways to represent the 2 era's in time and i have always gone back to the original idea

3. Homework: How are you using the laws in relation to your contribution to The
UPHERE exhibition? Provide a short explanation and example for TWO of the
laws so far. Use your work towards and your examples.
Time: i try to set aside time for both my designs and also to my role in the exhibition planning.
Emotion: with my designs i have put in quite a lot of feeling into each piece, trying to give it some meaning. even with the exhibition i add some of my own ideas/ feeling towards how i imagine the exhibition to be

Origination 2010 Week 9

Reading quiz: chapter 8 - Trust

1.Provide an example of a situation where you have to have trust – in the same
vein as the author in his swimming lesson example. What made you trust in this
situation and how did you feel?
When my friend wanted to restring my electric guitar. He is a very good guitar player and knows his stuff, but still made me a little bit uneasy

2. Where in our exhibition do we need to instill trust? Give examples. How are we
going to achieve this?
when we were picking the name for the exhibition. we had come up with a name that stood alright for 2 weeks, a few people had come up with some great designs to match the name, then everyone changed their minds about it

3. What strategies are used to instill trust? Examples? Where do we need to employ
this in uphere? How are we going to do this?
to get the guest attention we need something very appealing on the advertisements we are handing out/ posting up. we accomplished this with the poster, having the legs stretched down is eye grabbing and also leads the eyes down to the text.

4. If you could “undo” any aspect of the preparation for the exhibition to-date, what
would you “undo”? With this in mind, what would would you change now in your
preparation strategy to overcome having to “undo” anything?
i would change the name, because it wasn't a name us students chose for the student exhibition. besides the name i wouldn't change anything, everything is fine and the the results would be the same with a different name. maybe the poster and dl's would be different but thats to fit the name.

5. Homework: How are you using the laws in relation to your contribution to The
uphere exhibition? Provide a short explanation and example for each of the laws
so far. Use your work towards and your examples.
Reduce: i tried to reduce the cluster with the hands outs, such as what information to add/ remove
Organize: with Amelia and Jarrods help we came up with a good layout for the hand out
Trust: we were trusted with coming up wit ha good hand out for the guest, and it was great! easy and straightforward

week 9 Collaboration

Blog Exercise – Being Supportive

In regard to creative collaboration:
Discuss these questions - write a paragraph on each and use examples

1 . Do you get the support you need?
in class, yes i do everyone is very helpful and always a blast to work/ study with. for example with a design concept i have, i would do a rough draft/ sketch of my idea and they would give me positive and negative feedback that helps me make the design better.

2. What percentage of students in your your origination class do you support?
i support everyone 100%, because they do the same for me so i like to help them anyway i can.

3. How?
when someone needs honest feed back on their designs or need someone to brain storm ideas with, i put aside my stuff for abit and help them out.

4. What about the others?
i help everyone

5. Could you improve the way you support others?
one way i can improve to help others, would be to finish my work quicker so i would have more free time to help others

6. How?
focusing on my work at first to get everything done and to check over it to see if it is okay, then i would have free time to relax and help others in need
